Diversity of individuals and organizations creates an environment where innovation and ideas flourish

Africa’s broad spectrum of diversity is unmatched globally. The richness of the continent’s natural resources, enormous human potential, and variety of cultural compliments in language, art and history make Africa truly unique.

We realize that our success as an organization depends on our ability to embrace the continent’s diversity, and expand the capability of our employees. We must ensure our employees can add value at home, at work and in their communities.

The Africa Diversity Council recognises the need to place more attention on Employee Engagement and creating the Right Work Environment. We recognise that when employees feel their differences are valuable, they will be most effective. Our goal is to better understand how our employees appreciate and define diversity on the continent. We will also focus on establishing the Cummins’ Business Case for Diversity.

Cummins’ Business Case of Diversity is:

  • On a personal level, the diversity of an individual is defined by his or her cultural and personal differences, as well as life and professional experiences.
  • At an organizational level, diversity is created through the distinct personalities and capabilities of each individual within the group.

The Africa Diversity Council monitors and holds our leaders and employees accountable for creating the Right Work Environment, which is Cummins’ strategic principle assuring employees that the physical and cultural work environment is conducive to excellent performance and continuous improvement.

The Cummins work environment has two equally critical components; the physical environment and the cultural environment. The physical environment must be clean, orderly, safe, secure and healthy. The cultural environment may be more difficult to see but it is no less important to the health and wellness of Cummins. We strive to establish an inclusive work environment where all employees can feel respected, included, challenged and recognized. We seek diversity in ideas and experiences from employees, regardless of racial or cultural backgrounds, age, gender, sexual orientation or disability. Everyone at Cummins knows that they are given the opportunity to work to their potential.

An all-embracing work environment accepts diversity and inclusion as a way of life. Diversity is visible at every level within Cummins. Many cultures, traditions, beliefs, languages and lifestyles are prevalent in both the workforce as well as the customer populations, and are respected without judgment. At Cummins, people are viewed as individuals who have come together to coordinate action towards the achievement of common goals.
